Milan is most well-known for its fashion. Some of the biggest names in fashion originated in this city, setting the standard for Milan to become one of the major capitals of fashion. Heard of Donatella Versace, Miuccia Prada or Giorgio Armani? They are just a few of the fashion designers that were born in Milan that went on to build their very own fashion empires.

If you love people-watching, you’ll never tire of watching the locals stroll past in their elegant and tailored fits. Those in Milan are known for their love of quality clothing that never goes out of style, due to their timeless cuts and design. Think luxury, regal and classic.

Milan fashion week is a key event in the calendar year for those in the fashion game. If you visit during this period, be prepared for it to be all hustle and bustle.

Tackle the city one bite at a time

Two bowls of minestrone soup

Those in Milan operate a little differently than us when it comes to dinner time. In Milan, it is common for people to enjoy apertivo (i.e. a pre-dinner) before the main course. Italians love to indulge in a few light nibbles and a bitter aperitif drink designed to stimulate the appetite before dinner. This has been going on since the 19th century and has now become common practice in many Italian bars. It usually occurs between 7 pm and 9 pm and is the busiest time of the evening.

As you are probably aware, Italy is known for its food - and Milan is no exception. They draw upon rich flavours like butter and use an abundance of meats to create some of their most well-known dishes. If you want to experience Milan cuisine in its most authentic form, there are a few key foods you should try.

Risotto alla Milanese at Ratanà

If there is one dish that is deemed iconic in Milan, it is its risotto. Enjoy the creamy, buttery goodness that is Risotto all Milanese at Ratanà.

Minestrone Milanese

Milan is big on meat. However, the minestrone is a great option for those that are vegetarian. It is the perfect comfort food in the winter and a refreshing option in the summer. Eaten hot or cold, this soup is a year-round favourite.

Panettone at Pasticceria Martesana

If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, you’ve got to give Panettone a try. It’s essentially a sweet bread, made from eggs, butter, sugar, raisins, and candied fruits. The result? A light and fluffy treat that is irresistible.
